Editing styles in the Manage Styles window

I want to edit multiple styles independently of the document I am editing.

I want to use the Manage Styles Window to do this,

Unfortunately, while you can select other styles, you can only edit the style of the active paragraph.

I want to set the outline numbering on ten different styles to match the header numbering I want.

Unfortunately, when I click on a style which does not relate to the style the currently active paragraph is using and try to edit it, the manager reverts to the style of the active paragraph and edits that.

This means that if I want to edit multiple styles, I first have to artificially create paragraphs with each of those styles and then click on them individually to make them the active paragraph and then I can edit that style.

Alternatively, I have to change the style of the current paragraph to each of the different styles and remember to set it back to the correct style once I have finished the process.

When I have twenty styles that I am unsure I am going to use in reality this is seriously tedious.

I strongly feel that The Style Management window should be for managing styles not applying styles to the current paragraph.

Very strange. This is not what I experience. So, please, edit your question to describe accurately the steps to reproduce the behaviour. Don’t forget to mention OS name, exact LO version and save format.

When I want to edit a style, i display the side style pane, select the style category (paragraph, character, …) and right-click on a name to Edit Style it.

Sounds like you need a list style.

Otherwise, if you try to add list numbering with Format>Bullet & Numbering, you are applying direct formatting and this can only be done on some real paragraph, not a paragraph style.

So explain also this goal.
