Equations in writer - wrapping and word count

I inserted an equation to my writer document for the first time and writer doesn’t include the words in the formula in the total word count. Is there a way to include this by any chance?
Also if I go to the properties >wrap tab of my equation, only the “parallel” option is available and others cannot be chosen. Why is that?

Hello

Is there a way to include this by any chance?

No.

Also if I go to the properties >wrap tab of my equation, only the “parallel” option is available and others cannot be chosen. Why is that?

Because - by default - a formula is anchored “As Character” (see Right click -> Anchor). Choose another anchor and other wrap options start to make sense and get activated / selectable.

Hope that answers your question.

Word count

A formula (made with the Math component) in an OLE object inserted into the document. It is seen as a whole and Writer does not try to analyse its contents (because OLE objects can be virtually anything). Contents does not participate in word wrapping and other formatting actions. The formula is considered only for its bounding box which specifies the space needed as well horizontally as vertically. What is inside this rectangular area is managed by an appropriate plugin module.

Wrap option

Your formula is a frame. For Writer, a frame requests a rectangular area (its bounding box) to display its contents. A frame can be positioned in various ways (anchor mode). In the case of formula, by default, anchor mode is As character. This means the bounding box is considered a single (huge) character and the formula will be set inline.

An As character frame has no user-controllable wrap mode because its seen as a character.

In the Wrap tab of the properties, no option is enabled: they are all greyed out. Parallel is indeed highlighted but this results only from the default and has no meaning in the As character case.

Note you can control centrally most of the formula properties by customising frame style Formula.

If you change anchor mode to something else than As Character, wrap option will become availble but the formula will no longer be inline with the text and can now be positioned anywhere in the page.

Note again: don’t use To page anchor mode until you know what it does. Contrary to the name, this is not the way to send a frame somewhere in the page. To paragraph and To character do that perfectly well without the surprising (to a newbie) consequences of To page mode. With To paragraph and To character, the frame is guaranteed to always remain on the same page as the anchoring paragraph.
