Fit to page (s)

I was not able to open the link suggestions, but was linked to bugs.
But I have one wish, in the old WP days there where a quit nice functions - fit to page.
If you had a document and it was to big to fit 1 or more pages, there were a function, called “fit to page” click on that and you could decide how many pages you want to reduce the document to, and the font, end line size was reduced automatically so it fit the thosen pages.
I have been missing this function for a long time typically you do not want to print 2 pages if pages 2 is only 2 lines.
Is there any chance this function will be available ?

This is a frequent problem. You have a workaround if you work consistently with styles, avoiding direct formatting (i.e. manual formatting).

You can play with top and bottom margins in the page style. If this is not enough to fix the issue, you can then try to enlarge slightly left and right margins. The next step is to change font size in the common paragraph style used for text, i.e. Text Body. In case your page rely on several paragraph styles, changing font size in Default Style will have an effect on all other styles. In particular, font size in Heading n styles is defined as a percentage of Default Style, ensuring a consistent relative size when Default Style is modified.

This is not as simple as “fit to page” but allows you more control.

There are some workarounds based on hard formatting - which is worse compared to @ajlittoz thoughts…
The OpenOffice extension paraDTP.oxt offers some possibilities for selected text parts:

  • font size
  • line height
  • character distance

Be aware that this extension once was built for OpenOffice but still works satisfactorily for LibreOffice.

Another workaround is to enlarge the paper size, export Writer file as a PDF and then have a printout on a smaller sized paper.

I was looking to see if there was an extension to something entirely different and saw ePublishing which among its various functions has one called Shrink text. The description says “If you need to shrink text to one page just place cursor at the end of the text and click on [icon]”. Maybe that is of interest to you. I have not tried it but remembered your request from a few days ago. Cheers, Al

Thanks all for quick respons, and suggestions. But I’ll just wait and hope this option to arrive to the program - I guess I’m not the only one who find it usefull.
So I Close the for now.
