Font (size) of footnote number in footnote

Using version 24.2.7.2 of LibreOffice (OS: Linux, Kubuntu 24.04.3) I am looking for a way to modify the font size of the footnote number in the footnote itself. Searching LibreOffice or the web I was not successful to find a way doing this.

Somewhere I read that one could set the font by using the style “footnote anchor”, but in the list of styles I can’t find this style (there is only “footnote”).

Anybody out there who could assist by pointing to the steps indicating how to go to the appropriate setting (e.g. Tools → … or Format → … or ?)?

Footnote Settings Help Page

Thanks Graham for trying to help me. But as I wrote, I looked for a solution by searching LibreOffice (i.e. its help file) and found the page you are pointing me to. But that does not help to solve the problem because there it says “assign character styles to the footnote anchor number”, but it does not explain how to do this. And this is exactly the question I asked.

To complement @PKG’s answer:

  • note anchor is the callout in text; xxxnote Anchor character style applies to the number or symbol in text (usually, smaller size superscript)
  • note character is the note id at start of its contents; xxxnote Character character style allows to format the number or symbol differently from note contents (which is controlled by paragraph style xxxnote, xxx = End or Foot)

The problem seems to be that “footnote character” did not show up among the list of styles:
LO_styles_footnote

Just now I recognized that additionally I have to check the “Character” symbol on top of the styles list (marked by you in red).

Because you display paragraph style category. There is a small toolbar above this list with 6 little icons. Presently the leftmost one (with a pilcrow sign) is highlighted: hover the mouse over it, it says (or it should) Paragraph Styles. The next one on its right looks like an A: click on it to show Character Styles.

The others are for Frame, Page and List styles. The rightmost is supposed to show Table Styles but they aren’t styles in the usual way. So, avoid them unless you accept unconditionally the choices of the implementer(s). Any manual change in the tables will be erased when the table is repainted.

Thanks – that solves it!
