I want to write a maths formula using Greek letters as well as ordinary letters. The choice of symbols does not seem to include Greek letters. Is there an easy way to do this?
In the Math window menus, select Tools > Symbols… in the dialogue, select Greek or maybe iGreek (italic Greek)
It is not clear if you’re typing your formulas “in-line” just like ordinary text or through Insert>OLE Object>Formula Object.
The latter case opens a “formula editor”, called Math, where you “describe” a formula with keywords. Some keywords name Greek letters as %alpha for lowercase alpha and %ALPHA for uppercase alpha.
If you’re typing your formula directly in Writer (but you’ll never achieve correct layout), Greek letters are inserted with Insert>Special Characters then selecting Greek & Coptic from the Character block drop-down menu.
PS: to get most accurate answer always mention OS name, exact LO release and save format.
PPS: there is a Math Guide in the LO documentation.
@BobCarr I did not consider that you might be creating a formula entirely in Writer, not using Math, but if you do and you are using a major English language (not English NZ) then simply typing :alpha: should be autocorrected to α and :Alpha: to Α
