Google.docx imports won’t create navigable headings to go from one chapter to another instantly. I removed all the formatting, but it still wouldn’t do it no matter what I tried. Grok and I tried for over 12 hours to no avail. I have a document called "Test-Headings-Problem.odt but haven’t uploaded it and don’t know where or how so it can be tested.
Look for the following symbol, when editing. (I have it in the lower right corner…):
The Navigator in the Sidebar is used for that, not the document itself. Just click on the desired heading
Please give me step by step instructions, because Grok and I tried so many things like this for over 12 hours. It does not work on any document I have imported from Google docx, even when I have stripped out all formatting.

We need first to know your skill level. In Writer, headings are considered as such (and therefore appear in the Navigator) once you have applied a Heading n (n=1 chapter, n=2 sub-chapter, …) paragraph style to the paragraph representing a heading.
If styles sound Klingon to you, I recommend you read the Writer Guide.

I finally solved the problem of headings never appearing in the Navigator.
The situation
I imported documents from Google Docs (saved as .docx) into LibreOffice Writer on a Mac. The chapter titles looked correct and the Styles panel even showed them as Heading 1 / Heading 2 when I clicked on them, but the Navigator always showed zero headings.
The cause
The heading paragraph styles existed, but they were not linked to the outline levels. In the Heading Numbering dialog, every level had “Paragraph style = None”.
The fix
- Go to Tools → Heading Numbering (on some versions it is called Chapter Numbering or Outline Numbering).
- Select Level 1 and set Paragraph style to Heading 1.
- Select Level 2 and set Paragraph style to Heading 2.
- Select Level 3 and set Paragraph style to Heading 3.
- Click OK.
After doing this, the Navigator immediately showed all 93 headings and I can now jump from chapter to chapter by double-clicking them.
I hope this helps anyone else who has the same problem after importing from Google Docs.
I fear this is one of the troubles caused by Google Docs. To add up to your problem, you manipulate a DOCX document with Writer. DOCX is not the native LO format. But don’t try now to convert to .odt. The idiosyncrasies are already there and would contribute to an even bigger mess in .odt.

The file came from Google Docs, exported as .docx, then opened in LibreOffice Writer on an iMac.
In the body text, some pairs of lines have less space between them than the surrounding lines. Print Preview makes it more obvious. It appears in many places, not on one page only.
What I have already checked:
- Font and size are the same on the tight lines and the normal lines (Crimson Pro, 13 pt).
- Format → Paragraph → Indents & Spacing: Single, Above = 0, Below = 0.
- Page Text Grid is off. I do not see Register-true.
- Keep with next paragraph is off.
- Hidden Paragraphs and Field Shadings do not explain it.
- Clear Direct Formatting, Paste Special → Unformatted text, and editing the body paragraph style do not fix it.
- Setting line spacing to Fixed once deleted a whole paragraph, so I am not using Fixed.
What would make some lines sit closer together than others when the font, size, and paragraph style already match? How can I even that out for the whole document?
