I have “check grammar as you type” checked and also “posible mistakes” is checked. If I type something with a compound adjective such as “silver coloured tube”, no hyphen is inserted between “silver” and “coloured”. There are no other grammar corrections or suggestions shown in a document.
Do I need to turn something else on to get it to work or do I have to add another checker such as LanguageTool?
I’m using Windows 10 and want to check English.
I think it is unlikely a grammar checker will pick up uncommon compound adjectives. You don’t want a checker to insert a hyphen in living room table but you probably do in man eating lion unless it is a story about a hungry traveller in a jungle.
Go to Tools > Options > Languages and Locales > English Sentence Checking to turn on individual settings.
There is a setting to turn on Language Tool in Tools > Options > Languages and Locales > LanguageTool Server.
You can test your question at https://languagetool.org/ to see the result.
I did that in LibreOffice, but it still doesn’t highlight any grammar issues. LanguageTool at that link didn’t add a hyphen to “silver coloured either” either. What I’m trying to get at too is whether there’s an add-on tool that can suggest a better way of expressing text when I’m writing an article? I submitted an article to a magazine and the editor changed it a little to improve sentences. I usually use ChatGPT for this sort of thing and it’s excellent at making suggestions, but I’m wondering can I do the same thing in LibreOffice Writer?
Make sure that you have set the language in your documents to the language that you use. You can see in the status bar at the bottom of the screen the language of the document. You can change the default language in Tools - Options - Languages and Locales -General.
Make sure you have the dictionary for your language installed, English (USA) dictionary will not work for English (UK) for example.
Grammar expectations can depend on the individual publication. In your example, one editor might add a hyphen but another might remove it. Your sample is unlikely to be interpreted any other way; a tube made of silver but was coloured would be a coloured silver tube so I would be inclined to leave the hyphen out. Electronic-mail quickly became E-mail but now looks odd written like that.
I believe there are extensions on the extensions site for an AI add-in, you could try one of those, Extensions » Libreoffice Extensions
