heading 2 does not use heading 1's number

Sorry if this has been asked before. I am new to LibreOffice (using Writer Version: 6.0.6.2 (x64)) and I am trying to help a neighbour move from Word 2003 to LibreOffice.

In his document I have created a custom heading 1 and custom heading 2. Custom heading 1 works fine. The problems are with custom heading 2.

This is what occurs:

  1. ABC

  2. DEF

  3. GHI

1.1 Jkl [this should be 3.1 heading number]

1.2 Mno [this should be 3.2 heading number]

Four. PQR [had to use Four as the digit 4 was changed in this text entry box and was displayed as 1!!]

1.3 Stu [this should be 4.1 heading number]

etc

I am sure this is simply fixed but I have spent several hours before deciding to ask the experts.

Thanks

Paul

Right. First: screenshots or imitations like what you did may show what the problem is but rarely offer the cause of the problem. Instead you should upload a sample file, at for instance www.mediafire.com, where people can download files without having to register first (so people don’t waste lots of time in their effort to help you).

You probably used numbered lists in the paragraph style definitions. That’s bad practice. You also don’t need custom heading styles. If the standard styles have formatting that you don’t like, just change that. Then in Tools - Chapter Numbering you can link each heading level to a paragraph style and numbering. See Document structure and numbering for an example (file). The fun part is that if you use the standard heading styles for you headings, the heading numbering will work almost automatically - you just have to turn on the numbering (and using the numbering of higher levels as well), but you won’t have to assign a custom paragraph style to each heading level.

EDIT : here’s an edited copy of your file with the numbering as you want it. Test2.doc Please note that it’s really better to save files in the native format of LibreOffice (odt in this case).

Oops! Replied to myself and not to you.

Thanks for your file which I have downloaded and examined.

In your file I tried to create a custom ‘Ross Heading 3’ style and a custom ‘Ross Heading 4’ style but failed miserably!

I don’t understand how to create custom heading styles in LibreOffice Writer despite reading the documenatation!

Is there an idiot’s guide?

Thanks again

Paul

Why do you even want to do that? Just use Heading 1 through Heading 9 and you should be fine. Simply change the formatting details in those styles as you did for your custom styles already.

When I try Heading 1, 2, 3 etc in the file they don’t have a number preceeding the heading text!

Also, by creating the custom ‘Ross Heading 3’ style and the custom ‘Ross Heading 4’ style I was trying to remind myself how I had created ‘Ross Heading 1’ and ‘Ross Heading 2’ styles.

You set the numbering in Tools - Chapter Numbering as stated in an earlier post. By default, numbering is disabled.

I have followed your advice and have successfully modified the standard Heading 1, 2, 3 etc styles and they are working fine in the document. I have now deleted my own custom heading styles.

My query has been answered to my satisfaction with your suggestion of using the default heading styles modified to suit my requirements.

Thank you for perservering with my dumb questions!

Paul

Thank you for your reply.

I have uploaded a cut down version of the file called Test.doc to www.mediafire.com as you recommended and shared the folder. Use My Files to access the file.

Thanks again.
