When I click heading levels shown (big H button in Navigator), Writer still shows gray arrows which need clicking to reveal the next level of headings. I have to go through them one by one and click to see what is below. Why put a button in Navigator if it doesn’t work? Why do we have to go elsewhere (Tools/Numbering, etc.) to maybe solve this? Using Libre Office v. 7.2.5.2 /MacOS 10.15.7.
Which “Big H” button? I’m under Fedora, KDE Plasma with Breeze icons. The look of the buttons may be different. Provide a screenshot. Thanks.
Right-click the icon to the left of the word “Headings” in Navigator and select “Expand All”.

Don’t use an “answer” when you in fact just give feed-back on a contributor’s answer. Comments are made for this. Otherwise you confuse users who would think (from the home page) that a solution has been found and won’t bother to check.
This “Big H” drop-down menu (which has a different representation under other themes) sets limits the number of levels shown in the Headings category. This will not expand or shrink the heading tree because you could have developed a chapter and not another one. Writer must respect what you requested and not force its own preferences on you.
It only truncates the current display without changing the state of expansion of the heading tree.
Unless the Mac version is not the same as Linux or Windows, when you hover the mouse over the menu icon, a tooltip pops up with Heading Levels Shown which is quite self-explanatory.
