Headings and numbered paragraphs

Hello,

I’m using Writer to create a document. I need to be able to include headers (for the ToC) and numbered paragraphs where the numbering is not interupted by the headers. For example,

heading 1
1. para 1
2. para 2

heading 2
3. para 3
4. para 4

heading 3
5. para 5
6. para 6

etc

I can’t see how to do this without the numbering resetting to 1 after each heading. I’m guessing I’m missing something obvious.

What method are you using to number your paragraphs?

Hello TXDon,

I think I’ve found the answer. I have created a custom list style and in the customize tab I have ticked the All levels consecutive numbering box. Seems to work.

Glad to hear.

For those who can’t guess the solution here it is.

The structure presented above is in fact headings intermixed with list items.

  • create a dedicated paragraph style for the list items
  • create a dedicated list style (so that this list does not interfere with other lists)
  • link this list style to the dedicated paragraph (Outline & List tab)
  • attach the paragraph to the desired Outline level (also in Outline & List tab) in order to include the list items in TOC

Apply this new paragraph style to your list items. Do not overstyle them with list numbering toolbar button, it is already done in the paragraph style definition. Also, take care to remove any manual numbering before applying the style.

Thanks ajlittoz, that works better than the method I was using.
