Sometimes, mainly when I copy text into a Writer document, the spaces between words are filled with a grey vertical bar (thick line). Very annoying. How can I avoid this from happening?
You should better provide a sample file.
From your description they may be non-breaking spaces. Try using paste special to insert your text. You can turn off display of the spaces (at least in OpenOffice) by toggling View|Field shading.
Remember that non-breaking spaces are not ordinary spaces; their width is not changed by justification. Grey shading is a way to warn you about it. You must replace them by ordinary space if this nit the intended end-result or, as suggested, paste special as text (without styling).
Thanks for the advice! I will try it, but I just found out that I can get rid of them with Ctrl + F8. I’m happy!

Ctrl+F8 merely hides the field markers, it doesn’t change the spaces into normal spaces.
