How can I lock a section to a fixed height inside a page?

Hello all!

What I am trying to do is to create a zone inside a page where I will insert images subequently in such a way that the section will always remain in the same height so as not to mess with the rest of the page formatting.

Also is there an online course where I can learn how to use LO?

Thank you all and have a great day

A section is not the tool for that. A section is a part of a sequence of pages controlled by the same page style where you can change “temporarily” some geometric parameters like additional left and right margins, called here indents or the number of columns. A section always remains “dynamic”, i.e. text flow will modify the size of the section to its needs.

What you want is a frame which can be controlled by a frame style where you will store all the customised parameters with their constraints: frame size, spacing to text, wrapping mode, anchor mode, position relative to the anchor, … Note that frame styles are the most difficult to tame but they give you predictability, reliability and stability in image positioning.

You paste or insert your image, you select it if not already done and you apply your frame style from the style sidepane, frame styles list.

When choosing an anchor mode, don’t use To page. Contrary to intuition, this does not position the frame in the page rather than in the anchor paragraph. It means the frame will be attached to the physical page for ever, no matter how you subsequently edit your document. Avoid this anchor mode until you fully understand the consequences. For example, you’re presently at page 46 and you anchor your image To page. The image is now on page 46 for ever. If you edit your document, removing text in such a way that only 10 pages are left, your image will still be located on page 46 with 35 blank pages you can’t delete!

The recommended anchor modes are To paragraph (where the frame always stays in the vicinity of the anchor paragraph when you edit the document) or As character for small images which are then considered as big characters and follow text flow within the paragraph.

You should start with the Writer Guide. It is not a tutorial but quite a good introduction to Writer powers. I recommend you study carefully the chapters about styles because Writer control is based on styles. Styles really allow you to extract the maximum from Writer.

Another good source is the built-in Help. Don’t use it as primary source because it is very concise but it is rather good and can give you quickly the missing hint when you’re stuck.

One of the best books about Writer is Bruce Byfield’s Designing with Libre Office which is now referenced aside the Writer Guide.

I don’t know of online course, but I’d tend to be cautious about what can be found on YouTube and others. They usually address pinpoint issues and are not endorsed by TDF or other contributors here. Start with the aforementioned book and ask questions here to clarify matters where you have doubts.
