I suggest you to apply the Styles instead of the individual direct formatting properties. Use the Customize feature to assign style to a hotkey:
Select your text, press Ctrl+K to insert a hyperlink
i’m happy with ctrl+K shortcut as it matches gmail. but what if i wanted to map it to another hotkey? i still have no clue how to use the customize hotkey window to assign or mod any hotkey for anything. is there a help page on how to do that?
Here is an initial Help page, Keyboard
There might be more information in Getting Started guide or the Writer Guide, download from English documentation | LibreOffice Documentation - LibreOffice User Guides

big thanks for that! @EarnestAl @robleyd
A. select a command in the Function list
B. select the key combination to be assigned in the Shortcut Keys list
C. click Assign
and i assume the whole user guide is at: https://help.libreoffice.org
so i figured out how to pop the ‘insert character’ box which i dont want, but cant figure out how to ‘apply (active) font color’ equal to clicking on the font color icon. starting to think i hit a wall on that; isn’t easily possible.
Create a paragraph or character style with the font colour that you want.
Apply a keyboard shortcut to that style
That is Help, if you want the user guide then the link I gave before and repeat here. Read about styles in the Writer Guide, download from English documentation | LibreOffice Documentation - LibreOffice User Guides
