how do I convert a microsoft word doc to a libre doc

I want to convert all of my microsoft word documents to odt. libre documents. When I converted one document, it still opened up as a microsoft word document.

If you are using Windows and odt, ods, etc open in Microsoft Office you will need to change the default associations. From Start click on Settings (on left, just above power button), Apps > Default Apps > Set defaults by app > LibreOffice > Manage. You’ll get a list of apps that LO can open. If you see an extension that you would prefer LO to open then click on the program name that is currently the default and select LibreOffice instead.

Alternatively, in File Explorer right-click on, say, an .odt file, select Open With… , in the window that opens select LibreOffice Writer under the heading more apps.

Open the document. Then use File>Save As and select native .odt format.

Be aware that the conversion may not be perfect because the suites are not based on the same principles. You’ll have to check thoroughly the result. The main points to care for are tables and numbered paragraphs (outline or chapter headings, lists).

Also, formatting will be a mess until you restyle everything with the LO Writer primitives: paragraph, character, page, frame and “list” styles.
