How do I drag an image in between characters like I can in Word and Google Docs?

Every time I try to drag an image in a document to put it where I want it to, instead of doing the thing I ask it to, it just moves vertically on the same line it was on instead of moving it beside whatever character or image I want it to be ahead of or behind in the same line like what I would expect it to do and I can’t figure out how to fix it and make sure that it’s the default. Every other issue I’ve had with LibreOffice Writer in terms of how I want it to function for me has been fixable on my own with just a bit of looking up, but I can’t seem to find the fix for this by myself, so I made an account on here just to ask someone who knows what they’re talking about cuz this is making me lose it.

Image management in Writer is extremely complex, thus allowing for extreme versatility. Hoiwever, this comes at a cost: it is not at all “intuitive”. And drag’n’drop tends to modify positioning image properties on its own, destroying what user may have set beforehand.

Images come in several “flavours” when it comes to positioning. The most important property is the anchor: it either incorporates it to text As character (and the image will be fully handled by text flow algorithm as if it were another character like A or B) or it is “detached” from text and sent “floating” in the page (anchor To paragraph and variants).

In As character case, you can’t move the image with the mouse because it is an element of text, just the same as you can’t move “e” with the mouse.

To give a useful diagnostic, mention OS name, exact LO version (as reported by Tools>About LO) and save format. Better, attach a 1-page sample file.

If do you add a space (or whatever another character) next to the image, select both, and drag the space, the image will go in tandem.

Your Images have the anchor As character, and cannot be moved horizontally. The solution is to cut the image Ctrl+X, place the cursor where you want it to appear and paste the image Ctrl+V.
Another option is to change the anchor To the paragraph and adjust the position.

So I’m screwed outta luck and I gotta do it the annoying way. Got it, thanks.

Your images in the video have the anchor As Character.

Writer has many ways to position the image and it is not easy to understand how it works if you don’t read the manuals.

The first setting for images is the anchor.

  • Check if the default anchor for images is the one you need in
Tools > Options > LibreOffice Writer > Formatting Aids

I suggest that you try Anchor To character (default for a clean install) to be able to drag it to suit. Word appears to default to anchor to line so this would be the closest.

Word 2010 also appears to Wrap as Parallel rather than Optimal.
