How do I permanently modify the default numbered list?

I see how to modify the formatting of a numbered list but I haven’t figured out how to make it permanent, i.e. to make the new formatting my default numbered list that appears every time I click on the list icon.

The tag “Common” is unfortunately not helpful.

1. Create/ modify a list style.
2. Save the document as a template.
3. Assign the template as the default as necessary.
4. Use the Stylist to apply your style(s) to new lists.
