how do I stop imported images from being hidden in writer and impress?

When I close a Writer or Impress file and re-open, the images imported are no longer visible but there is a small icon on the top left of the space where the image was. How can I re-open the image?

Go to Tools | Options |LibreOffice Writer | View and ensure that Images and Objects is checked in the Display section.
