The help system (F1 or ‘Help’ pull-down menu) is not affected by the font replacement table (Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Fonts).
How can I change this font, which at the moment is some awful decorative font.

Actually it turns out this IS affected by the font substitution table, it’s just a matter of determining which font is being used for the help (bearing in mind not all fonts on the system will show up on the LibreOffice fonts list, but they will still be used in documents if they are installed on the system.
Thus I found out by copying text from the help file into a LibreOffice document that the font being used for the help file was called either ‘Albany’ or ‘Albany AMT’, from a list of many fonts, so I substituted both those fonts for nice plain ‘Arial’ via ‘Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Fonts’
The appearance of the help is determined in the file “default.css” in the folder “help//” . You can open it in a text editor. The property “font-family:” is in the first two rules.
