How to disable automatic hyperlinking

I need to correct errors in quite a few e-mail addresses in my church membership spreadsheet, but they are all hyperlinks. Firstly, it seems next to impossible to remove a hyperlink once it is added, which fact makes it impossible to edit typos. Furthermore, I really, really do not wish to create more errors in the data by re-typing the addresses completely.

If that is really what I have to do, however, then I will do it, but how then do I make future corrections easier by preventing the text from being hyperlinked again? I see no option in Tools > Options for disabling automatic hyperlinking. So, tell me: what’s the trick?

I am aware that Ctrl + K will insert a hyperlink, but the dialogue window that pops up shows no way to remove a hyperlink. If there is a command to remove a hyperlink after it has been created, where is it? Also, how can I remove hyperlinks from a block of cells?

long standing debate : 66694 – UI: Add context menu for "Remove hyperlink" when right-click on button form objects containing a hyperlink.

When you press Ctrl+K, the hyperlink is highlighted. You can click inside the hyperlink and edit where you need to make corrections, or with the selection still there just paste a new address for the hyperlink. You also have the option of editing the visible text.

Select the cell(s), Copy, then click Edit > Paste Special > Paste Unformatted Text (Ctrl+Alt+Shift+V)

Click Tools > AutoCorrect Options > Options and untick the box Url recognition

If you do that then you could have three columns, first for visible text, second for the url address, the third has a hyperlink formula, e.g. =HYPERLINK(A1;B1), only the third needs to be visible unless editing

Ctrl+M, but you will lose all other direct formatting. @EarnestAl options is a step longer but better here.

Yes.
You can add this button to a toolbar, or assign a shortcut key for that command.
But I can’t make it work with limited use in Calc (see next comments). :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

In Linux, the button is grayed out until the cell with the hyperlink is edited. Will retest in Windows.
Anyway, that is a cell by cell task.

Thanks for the reminder.
I wrote this code in my spare time but rarely used it myself, and since I’m getting old and forgetful ...
These days, it seems like I never forget to forget.

I should add that only the second Sub has some value. The first one is complicated without any good reason.
And:
If a character format is applied to the hyperlink display (already linked), and shall be preserved when the link is removed, you need to apply that format also to a space left of the link or the link must be the first text portion in the cell.

You folks are the best. Thank you all so much. This is all very helpful information.
