How to emphasize text on top of any image to make the text more readable?

I have a slideshow with text in front of each image. In some slides, the text is in front of a dark area, in others in front of a light area. I want to emphasize the text so it can be easily read in all slides.

In Illustrator, I would give the text a white fill and a black stroke, and increase the stroke until all text stands out. I understand that I can check “Outline” Format > Character > Font effects, but I cannot control the width of the stroke.

In Illustrator, I could also apply a feathering or halo effect around each letter, e.g. black letters and a white halo fading to 0% opacity. I don’t think I can do that in LibreOffice.

The only solution I found was to have a text box with a transparent color (Format > Object and shape > Area) and have text inside it. For example, black text works well with a white background of 50% transparency. One problem is that this wastes a good deal of the background image and the sharp edges of the partially opaque text box can fall on a face in the image.

Does LibreOffice have any other method of emphazing text on top of any image?

In the Insert --> Fontworks you can choose the line-width, add a shadow with determined color, angle and transparency. I think that finer features like feathering or halo are not (yet) there; we must leave something for the more advanced DTP and illustration packages, right?
