How to force PDF:s to be opened in Impress for presentation?

Impress works well for presenting PDF-slides, but its a pain to open the PDFs in Impress:

  1. Start Impress
  2. Go to File > open [Ctrl]+[O]
  3. Go to the drop-down at the bottom and choose the file type “PDF - Portable Document Format (Impress)”
  4. Pick the PDF file to open.
  5. When the file is opened, press [F5] to go to presentation Mode.

If I skip 3. above, the PDF will be opened in Draw for editing, which is not what I want.

Just to be clear: I do not want to edit the PDF, I want to present it.

  • Is it possible to do this in a simpler, faster way? Some command line option?

For present your PDF just use any PDF reader. Adobe Reader, Sumatra PDF in Windows, or standard viewer in any desktop Linux

Yes, that is the way I do at the moment (I use Ubuntu and Windows), but a tool like Impress gives a little more when presenting:

  • Two screens, one to the audience, one to the presenter.
  • The presenter screen shows the present and next slide, notes, presentation time, a thumbnail grid etc.

There are some tools out there to present PDFs, and I have used several of them, but I would like to test Impress. The only obstacle to start using it is the clumsy opening of the PDFs in Impress.
