How to hide/show tab when layout is tabbed?

Hello,

is there a way to hide/show tabs like in ms word or onlyoffice?

The various tabbed UI are offered only as a convenience to M$ Word switchers. These UIs are not recommended because the encourage continuation of M$O workflow.

Word and Writer are different applications based on different principles. If you remain in your Word habits you’ll be able to use Writer efficiently and will meet performance issues and, more dramatic, formatting difficulties.

Writer is based on styles, ubiquitous styles. Word has no other means as direct formatting (DF) beyond paragraph styles. You should read the Writer Guide at least for an introduction to styles.

With styles, you only need to resort to UI buttons or menu commands exceptionally. Then the standard UI is a better companion. All you have to do is to apply (activate) styles on your sequences. For maximum comfort, you can assign styles to keyboard shortcuts so that your hands always remain on the keyboard. Then the standard UI is a better companion because is offers access to more style functions than tabbed UIs. Also the style sidepane allows you to see all styles (categories and members in a category).

That means: no. Right? Something like: “LibreOffice can’t hide tabs because it has a superior way of designing and displaying the UI.”

No, it is not a superior way of displaying the UI. Writer is best used when you follow a different formatting methodology than in Word. This different approach to formatting, i.e. “styling” and, more, “semantic styling”, suggests a different UI which better emphasises the Writer-way.

Of course, you’re free to keep on Word routine. But you won’t benefit of the advanced formatting features present in Writer.

The main obstacle to optimal use of Writer is to think that both suites are “equivalent”. If you don’t accept to drop everything you know about Word (and even what you think you know about document formatting), you won’t meet success.

Remember: every change of tool requires an adjustment in procedures. Do you drive screws with a hammer when you switch from nails? You can strike a screw with a hammer and it will penetrate wood or plaster but this is not the ideal way of securing an assembly.
