How to move cross reference targets without losing them?

I have this scenario in Writer:

• I am using cross references to headings etc.
• These work very well. But If I want to re-arrange the order of headings, by cutting from one place and pasting to another, the cross reference target gets “lost”. I assume the magic number that is the target gets renumbered.
• Consequently, existing cross references to this become “Error: reference source not found”.

Is there a a way around this? Wanting to rearrange document headings is reasonable common I’m sure…

Do you remember if you ever got the cross references to stop getting lost?

I’m trying to find the rhyme or reason for it. I can sometimes move them and they stay find-able. Sometimes change text in heading and they are fine-- other times, do either and they get lost.

Instead of cut & paste you can use the navigator. Open it with F12.

Thanks for the idea, but…
I presume you mean I can drag an item to a different position by using the navigator.
So I tried it, the section moved, but all cross refs to it became broken. So it is identical to cut’n’paste.

One further note: I have changes being recorded and shown. Don’t know if this is relevant (and I do want to record and show changes), but it may be relevant.

Any other ideas?

I have several dozens of numbered references and when I want to move them, changing the order, the reference becomes broken. It seems that the writter do not copy or move the link or whatever is associated with the text that make it a reference.

However if you copy and paste Special as HTML (Hyper Text … seems to work. Also remember that the references are not updated automatically until you press F9.
