How to resize image without changing text?

How do you resize an image without it overlapping other images or wrapping surrounding text?

I want to place an image between two paragraphs.

So I set the cursor between two paragraphs and then use Insert->Image, which works fine.

However, the image is too big, but if I use the resize tabs on the image to change its size, that seems to make the image “pop” out of the document and either float over text or remove any line breaks, making the surrounding paragraphs wrap around the image, which I don’t want.

How do I keep the image between two paragraphs, maintaining the line breaks, but just make the image smaller?

First of all, mention OS name, LO version (all 4 numbers) and save format. Do this editing the question without adding a comment (the discussion has not started yet). The “pencil” tool to edit posts appears once you click on .

Usually it is better to resize image outside Writer with a dedicated image processing program.

You must understand there are two important properties with images:

  • anchor: the paragraph or character the image is “attached” to
When you edit your document, the anchor point usually moves. The image will move with its anchor
  • position: the anchor determines in which page the image is laid out; the position settings define where the image lies inside this page (you can restrict the location to be in the rectangle of the anchor paragraph)

A third property comes then into play: wrap mode. Wrap mode tells how the image interacts with text: from “independent” (i.e. image and text ignore each other and they overlap; image is considered transparent) to “antagonist” (i.e. image acquires space and throws away text above and or below).

Newbies find that As character anchor is easier to handle in the beginning. The image is considered a (very large) character similar to other characters and is managed the same while flowing text. However, since the image is part of text, you can’t move it anywhere in the page. To make things even easier, some choose to restrict paragraph contents to the image only.

Images are quite difficult to tame because any operation on them with the mouse (resizing, moving, …) tends to change many settings simultaneously in some unpredictable way. The only reliable method is to design and apply frame styles. They are described in the Writer Guide but they need practice.
