How to Upgrade LibreOffice in Mint 13

Help Upgrading currently installed:
LibreOffice 3.5.7.2 Build ID: 350m1(Build:2) This product was supplied by The Document Foundation, Debian and Ubuntu.
on this machine:
My computer: Processor-AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5000+ × 2 ; RAM-1.9 GiB; Graphics-GeForce 6150SE nForce 430/integrated/SSE2/3DNOW!; OS - 32-bit Linux Mint 13 Maya; Cinnamon Desktop

I am new to Linux (3 months). I reformatted my Windows XP hard drive when they quit supporting XP and installed Mint with Thunderbird, Firfox, and LibreOffice Suite and have been 100% Linux since and progressing slowly. So reasonably clear instructions for upgrading would be appreciated. I have seen at least 4 methods of doing this and they are all different depending on where the LibreOffice was downloaded from. My distribution came with my iso download from the Mint web page.Some instructions say delete the existing LibreOffice Suite others say nothing. All appear to indicate the update is performed through Terminal. But with the Cinnamon desktop the libreoffice suite can be removed and installed from there, my preference. I really don’t want to go back to the windows world so any help is greatly appreciated.

I have been on Linux Mint 13 LTS (Xfce) since it was released (May 2012, it seems) - love it. Makes this ancient Toshiba laptop think it’s a modern computer!

I get my LibO updates from the Ubuntu PPA, and am now on Version: 4.2.4.2 (Build ID: 420m0(Build:2)). I don’t actually remember how I got to this arrangement, though. It’s possible that I purged LibO from my system before getting it from the PPA. That’s the route I would take if I were you: here are some instructions on how to remove LibreOffice.

Then you could follow the WebUpd8 instructions for installing LibO 4.2 from PPA, and if you like the Sifr icons (I do), then follow the additional steps to install in in this article. And this is exactly the instructions I used.

You’re right: the steps above are all done using the terminal. But after this, you’ll get the upgrades automatically with Update Manager. Hope that helps.

[P.s. It might be preferable to include all the instructions here, but (a) there is quite a bit; (b) the sites linked are stable and reliable; and (c) this is more a Mint issue than LibO.]

@dajare - I am too am XP renegade running over to Linux. I am currently testing LMDE MATE and consider to stay with the Debian edition.
This automatic updating of LibO as you described it for LM 13, is this also possible for LMDE MATE? Could you possibly give some advice what is best to be done?

@ROSt53 - AFAIK, the links above would not apply to Mint LMDE, but you would be better off asking in the Mint forums or on Unix & LInux SE. The “main” Mint editions are built off Ubuntu, but Debian Edition isn’t. I have been very happy using “regular” Mint; unless there is something particular taking you to LMDE, it would be worth testing Mint 17 LTS Maté - happy computing until 2019!

@ROSt53 - P.s. Note that Mint 17 LTS is still an RC release; I also spotted a comment noting a Maté issue for LibO. I’m sure it will be sorted for the stable release, but worth keeping an eye on if this is of interest.
