I can't use HELP

A lot of work has gone into Libre Office, but I can’t find the way in. For example I got “error522”, but I tried search nothing. Earlier I had “#VALUE” from prior experience I knew that HELP wouldn’t. I would really like to switch to Libre Office, but with no help for the simplest things I can’t. I looked under CONTENTS there were a whole list of topics but none fit my problem.

Wow.
Typing “error” in the Index of the help gives “error codes – list of” as the second result.

You might prefer to start with the Calc Guide which is more structured than Help. Appendix B lists error codes and lists error 522 as:

522: Circular reference: Formula refers directly or indirectly to itself and the Iterations option is not selected under Tools > Options > LibreOffice Calc > Calculate.

The Calc Guide can be downloaded from English documentation | LibreOffice Documentation - LibreOffice User Guides

I have the same trouble using the LibreOffice help. There is a lot of information there but it isn’t structured well.

What I do is just search with Google (or whatever). Search for “LibreOffice Calc” plus whatever your question is. This almost always gives me a nice writeup describing exactly how to solve my problem.

For example I searched for “libreoffice calc error522” and got the following link: https://www.libreofficehelp.com/error-522-libreoffice-openoffice/ which is a nice page describing in plain language what causes Error 522 and how to fix it.

Please!

  1. You definitely realize, that people differ from one another, at least in some subtle aspects. One would consider some keywords, another would think about a different set. You simply can’t claim “it isn’t structured well”, based on your personal failures. At most, you might know that it’s structured in a way that is not perfect for you.

  2. It is an open source project. People come, see deficiencies, and contribute their volunteer energy. Even if people don’t feel like contributing code - when they see a problem in help, isn’t it time to give back by improving what needs improvement in your opinion? And then accept “the result is awful” from someone next coming to express their failures in not-so-kind way  If you decide to get your hands dirty and join the documentation team, you will get acquainted personally to the people whose hard work you characterised today

Look at MS Excel. Also heaps of official documentation - and still lots of sites like “Planet Excel” and so on … so indeed, there would be resources trying to provide additional materials, which do not mean that official is so poor
