Image positioning

I have a situation that when I insert an image into a page of text to the right hand side, the image positions itself to the extreme right of the page (not inside the margins). I have tried anchoring the image to both paragraph and character with no change. Is there another setting I am not aware of? Inserting images to the left of the page works OK. I’m a bit frustrated. Any help would be most appreciated.

Drag/drop: If image is anchored to paragraph (to character, to page) it should be “ignoring” the margins.
If inserted by using menu Insert | image… the image should be within the text margins (anchored to paragraph; default).
Drag/drop causes a differerent behaviour (position “anywhere” on page).

Probably (?) the change of anchoring may alter the result:
menu Tools | LibreOfficeWriter | Formatting Aids | Image :: Anchor :: As Character

I can’t tell you more about that, probably a sample file may be helpful.

Cheers

Thanks for that. I believe it must be something to do with the document as I reproduced it on a new file as one page and it works OK. I fear I am not using Writer correctly as I’m creating a magazine of 24 pages with combined text and images. Should I be looking to use Draw instead? I used MS Publisher before.

If you use Writer, you should definitely save in ODT format.

You can use Writer as well as Draw, it depends on amount and positioning of images (“overloading” of images would require Draw, IMHO).
There are some tips for using Writer:

  • always link images, don’t embed them
  • save Writer file and images in one folder (or images in dedicated folder)
  • 300 ppi/dpi per image is enough resolution for print-outs - apply that with an image processing app
  • avoid overlapped images, better combine them into one by using an image processing app (like GIMP)

In addition to @Hrbrgr 's hints I’d like to focus you on [Tutorial] Some useful hints on using images - very useful!

About text overflow (from one page to another)
Be aware that Writer can handle that sufficiently (regular text; connected frames). Draw cannot connect text from one page to the other (in difference to MS Publisher).

Color separated PDFs
LO can’t do that.

M$ applications have encouraged people to direct format their documents. Writer is more elaborate than this. You won’t be able to really control image placement if you do it with the mouse. The only reliable way to produce predictable placement is to right-click image and Properties, Type tab where you configure very accurately the position relative to well-defined references (like page margins, paragraph bounding rectangle, …).
If several images have the same positioning properties, you can store the parameters in a frame style so that you only need to assign this style to the new image to have positioned the same.

If your document has a fixed number of pages made of independent articles (the document is not a single text flow and page boundaries are significant, i.e. an article must not cross some page limit), Writer is not the tool of choice. You should consider some DTP (desktop publishing) app like Scribus (open software).
