Impress crashes when browsing through notes pages

Some days ago, I installed Ubuntu and Libre Office. I’m using Impress (24.2.7.2) to create a presentation and run into a number of issues… The ones on compression distrorting images’ ratios, not being able to compress all images at once and not being able to see my notes with my slides and not being able to go to the next slide with my mouse wheel are annoying (will look for topics on those…).
But my presentation showing strange behaviour (including crashing) related to Notes view is terrible. Can anyone help out:

  • When going through my slides in Notes View, it stops before the end. So after slide/notes page 8, it does not move to page 9. In the Slides Pane, the focus does move to next pages, though.
  • Same when I start at the bottom (by selecting the last slide in the Slides Pane and using Page Up. At a certain slide, it stops going ‘up’ any further.
  • If I then select the next slide in the Slides Pane, Impress crashes.

Also, when going to the Normal View, I cannot return to the Notes View.

So, what could be the issue here? My file is 28MB, could the size be an issue? Anything else I should look into?
If I could see how, I might include the presentation… so if that is at all possible and helpful, please inform me how to include it :-/

Help very much appreciated.

Please test in safe mode, Menu/Help/Restart in Safe Mode

Thanks for your suggestion @mariosv
Unfortunately, also in Safe Mode, it crashed after some scrolling forward and backward in Notes View. It only took a bit longer.

Also in Safe Mode in the Notes View, I still get stuck at a certain page (although, in the Slides Pane, the focus shifts when I use Pg Up/Down).

If you use slide transitions in your presentation then maybe it sticks on the transition at page 9. The last 16 transitions shown in the pane are OpenGL transitions and maybe the graphics card/drivers does not support OpenGL. If that is the case then choose another transition that is not OpenGL.

Or is there a movie on slide 9 that takes a while to load?

If your computer cannot Extend the screen across two monitors then it is a limitation of the computer that you cannot see the notes. Does Impress Remote work with Ubuntu? If it does then you can see your notes on the phone while it controls the presentation.

Works on the presentation screen in Windows, otherwise in Notes view the arrow keys work in the Slide pane

Thanks for your reply, @EarnestAl.
The problems I am having are when editing the presentation. So it’s not about presenting it.
There are no slide transitions or movies in it…

Yeah, this has nothing to do with transitions. I’m looking at a very simple deck with no transitions and 14 pages. When I try to view the “Notes” view, libreoffice immediately eats 5GB (gigabytes) of additional RAM, spikes all CPU cores at 100% for a few seconds, and crashes. It’s utterly unusable on my wife’s laptop with 8GB of RAM and 9GB of swap.

“Normal” view works; it’s just the “Notes” view that has some huge memory leak – which is ironic, because the speaker notes are all just plain text, not even with even so much formatting as a bullet list in them.

Please attach a sample file, reduce the size as much as possible without private information,
and paste the information in Menu/Help/About LibreOffice, there is a copy icon…
