In my program, if I increase the indent of a paragraph, the spacing (i.e., distance from the paragraph before) is also increased. I don’t want this. What can I do?
Your question is very ambiguous.
Spacing above or below Paragraph?
I assume that you have made the change in the “Body Text” paragraph style.
So if you have increased the spacing at below, for example, the spacing to the next paragraph will be increased. However, this also applies to the paragraph above.
Please describe your goal in detail.
Attach a reduced and anonymized file that demonstrates the problem.
Also indicate which operating system and LibreOffice version you are using, as well as the saved file format.
Thank you for getting back to me.
Let me be more specific.
I go to a Paragraph in my text
I increase the indent. Either my using the button in the tool bar (“increase indent”. Or by going to Format → Paragraph → Indent → Before Text (which I set a number > 0)
If I do this, the paragraph’s indent is increased but automatically also the distance from the paragraph before.
Please note: If I go again to Format → Paragraph, the Spacing “above Paragraph” is still indicated as: 0,00 cm. But it in fact, it isn’t. There is distance of at least two lines.
I only want to increase the number of “before text” but I don’t want this to lead to an increase of the spacing above paragraph. And this does not work.
I hope I made myself clearer now.
Thank you for your help.
If spacing above the paragraph is also increased, you have “invisible” characters, like spaces, there. The amount is larger than can be accommodated by the new indents, resulting in a new line containing the excess characters. The only way to know is, on your side, to enable View
>Formatting Marks
, on our side, to provide us a sample file for detailed analysis.
From the description of your procedure, you practice direct formatting (which urban legend says it is “intuitive” while it is the most tedious and unreliable way to format any document). There are very vicious forms of direct formatting, such as aligning with spaces or creating vertical spacing with empty paragraphs.
