Inserting images in tables

I have been using Writer for years and lately when I insert a jpg image in a table cell, after saving, the images are all lumped together and I have to constantly paste them back into the appropiate cell. All the anchors do not work. Help!!! This has been for the past two or three updates. I am using 25.8.4.2 - current version.

.odt or .docx ?

upload an exemple ?

An image, more generally a frame, interacts only with text. Also a frame can be freely sent anywhere in the page. Consequently a frame cannot be “jailed” inside any container, be it a table cell.

Some releases back, developers made the unfortunate decision to change the default value for Allow overlap attribute (of frames). It is now on by default, which means frames don’t automatically solve their position conflict (they are allowed to overlap). If you have not manipulated images for a long time, you may bump into this behavioural change.

Managing frames in Writer is a difficult matter. Natural approach is to resize and move them with your mouse. This creates a very pernicious form of direct formatting (DF). DF is not really detrimental on text (though it immediately shadows all text formatting automation) but it has catastrophic effects on frames (causing instability and unpredictability, aggravated by the fact that this DF is next to impossible to clear).

You didn’t give technical details about your goal nor attached a sample file. We’re left with attempts to guess out of our crystal balls.

If your goal is to constraint your images into table cells, you can do it by anchoring the images As character after having resized, rotated, clipped and cropped them outside Writer (Writer is not an image processing program and offers only rudimentary image features – it is better that Writer accepts then “as is”).

Anchor As character turns images into big characters which are handled with the text flow algorithm. Thus the image will be contained inside paragraph indents and wrapped on next line if text preceding it needs it. It will also automatically be flushed to next page if there is not enough room.

Maybe, you previously set the default anchor to be As character and for some reason the setting has reverted to To character.
If you want As character to be the default then click Tools > Options > LibreOffice Writer > Formatting Aids and set Image Anchor to As character. OK

Thank you! Your response answers a lot of questions, because Libre Office never worked like this before! I’ll change the Anchor to Character to see if that works! – Sunny

Thank you!!! That did it. As Character prevented the images moving around after saving and reopening. I owe you a great big THANKS!!!
