Keyboard shortcut for (the cursor to remain in that cell after entry)

I’ve been using Libre Calc for the past 3.5 years and one thing I cannot find is the ability to use a keyboard shortcut to enter data in a cell and for the cursor to remain in that cell after entry. If I press Enter it goes down one cell, Shift-Enter make it go up one cell or any of the cursor moment keys does it but moves in the selected direction. In MS excel this is done by pressing Ctrl-Enter. I am mostly a keyboard person and don’t want to take my hand off the keyboard to use the mouse unless necessary.

Is there an equivalent I can use in Calc or is this something I should make as a feature request?

Why would you want that?

Because I do. Is that OK?

No. You are OK to want whatever you want. But for your wish to be implemented in a software, there needs to be a good reason other than that. And when you are asked such a question on a site like this, it’s up to you to “defend your rights” like you do, but it’s silly and leads to nowhere, while trying to describe how it benefits you may serve a reason for developers to consider it (and @erAck is our lead calc developer, and could have a good reason to know why people want this or that … even if that already exists …) … but shrug.

Exactly. I wanted to know in what workflow someone wants to stay on the same cell where a CursorUp after Enter is an easy sequence. Anyway, I don’t care anymore, Alt+Enter does it, and even if that was to copy the cell and paste it over a range then selecting the range prior to entering data and closing with Alt+Enter will do the same quicker. Have a nice Sunday.

I thought I articulated my thoughts and subsequent question clearly. I was asking if there was a way to do what I was looking for as I could not find it in the online help, so I came here. I asked a question expecting an answer only to get a question which is not an answer.

Thank you to @erAck for providing an alternative (above) which is what I was seeking.

Maybe disabling
Menu/Tools/Options/LibreOffice Calc/General - Input Settings - Press Enter to move selection
I think it’s there from ever, with LibreOffice.

Thanks for that - I’ve already been there and this option (which does not allow for you to remain in the same cell) only applies when you are not editing the cell.

What I am looking for is that while the cell is being edited (as opposed to being selected), I can press a keyboard shortcut to complete the edit and leave the cursor in that cell. As mentioned in my OP, I can achieve this in MS Excel by pressing Ctrl-Enter but am looking for an equivalent (if there is one) in Libre Calc.

Thanks for replying. Please understand this is not the end of the world for me if I can’t find a solution however, I see it as a small knot I’d like to untie.

What about Alt+Enter?

F2 may be what you look for. It toggles cell edit mode.

  • If you type some data, it will normally be entered in the cell when pressing either Enter or an arrow.
  • If after typing some data, you instead want to stay in the cell to do further edits, hit F2. Now, arrow keys will move the cursor around in the data in the current cell so data can be edited. Hitting F2 again will end edit mode: arrow keys again will move you to the next cell.
  • F2 can be used anytime: it will allow you to edit contents of the highlighted cell.
  • Use Ctrl+Enter while in Edit mode to enter a new line within a cell.

b.t.w., I expect that this all works identically in Microsoft Excel.

Many thanks

F9 (the function Recalculate).
