I am trying to insert a date field into a template that creates the current date when the document is opened for the first time, and that preserves that date when the document is saved and subsequently reopened in the future.
This is possible in MS Word but my efforts to create this in LibO have failed. If I insert a fixed date field into the template the document date is always the date the template was created and not the date the document is created.
If I insert a fixed date field into the template the document date is always the date the template was created and not the date the document is created.
And you really have saved the document as a template file (.ott
) and open a new document based on that template by selecting the template through File -> New -> Templates
? (btw: Field Date (fixed) is the correct way to do that with templates). If you don’t get an Untitled #
new document, then you don’t open a new document based on a templates, but you are editing the template itself.
Hi @ginnes.
Any update on this question? You’ve been provided several proposals but no feedback yet.
Thanks.
Try Insert > Field > More fields, then in the DocInformation
tab and in Type, Created
.

Hello,
to create and use a template, which has an initial date based on the current date, perform the following (the description uses MyLetterhead
as an example for the template name)
Create the Template
- Open a new document
-
Insert -> Field -> Date
(and assure it is set Date (fixed)) - Add all your required text
File -> Templates -> Save As Template
- Provide a Template Name (e.g.
MyLetterhead
) - Select a Template Category ( e.g.
My Templates
) - Click button Save
- Close the file (no additional save required)
Note
This can be shortened, if you save any file designed as template in .ott
format (Filter ODF Text Document Template (.ott)
) into your personal template path, which is shown in Tools -> Options -> LibreOffice -> Paths -> Type: Templates
Use the Template
File -> New -> Templates
- Select template
MyLetterhead
- Click button Open
- Watch that is has an initial name
Untitled 1
Hope that helps.
