Libre Office cannot open files through File Explorer any more

Our production PC running Windows 10 was, yesterday, opening ODS documents in LibreOffice by simply double clicking the icon in File Explorer. The files live on a Samba share on our NAS.

This morning I tried three different ways to open files with the following results:

  1. Double click the file’s icon in file explorer, or right click and select “Open” or “Open With…” and then LibreOffic Calc.

The “in progress” icon shows briefly. Libre Office Calc doesn’t start. Nothing else happens.

  1. Run Libre Office Calc manually then drag and drop the icon from File Explorer.

Calc shows an error, something about “Cannot open object due to insufficient rights”.

  1. Run Libre Office Calc manually then use File->Open, browse to the file and select it.

The file opens correctly as expected.

Similar behaviour as in method 1 was seen for a .docx file which should open in Libre Office Writer.

LibreOffice is version 7.2.0.4.

Just wonder why your question doesn’t read: “Explorer cannot pass a filename correctly to LibreOffice any more

And nobody installed this optional Windows Update September 1, 2021—KB5005101 (OS Builds 19041.1202, 19042.1202, and 19043.1202) Preview ?

@anon73440385 , OP would have to know that file allocation is a matter of the operating system.

But unfortunately he could not reveal which operating system it is.

From @anon73440385 : And nobody installed this optional Windows Update…

I just installed it on my end via the normal update process.

The file associations are still there.

With me:

Version: 7.2.0.4 (x64) / LibreOffice Community
Build ID: 9a9c6381e3f7a62afc1329bd359cc48accb6435b
CPU threads: 8; OS: Windows 10.0 Build 19043; UI render: Skia/Raster; VCL: win
Locale: de-DE (de_DE); UI: de-DE
Calc: CL

I don’t think it is a file association problem. Drag and drop fails too, and when I do “Open with…” it correctly shows LibreOffice as the default application, and I get the same behaviour as when simply double clicking.

LibreOffice version: 7.2.0.4.

Mentioned File Explorer, Samba and NAS in one paragraph. Must be Windows.
SCNR.

Before I figured out how to use this site, I was clicking the “Answers” button by mistake. See below.

@anon73440385, the question doesn’t read that because Libre Office does not report the path it has been asked to open. Thus I could not see that the path that went to Libre Office was not the path of the file I dragged into it.

Sorry I forgot to mention the OS version - it is Windows 10.

Are you saying that that optional update caused the problem or would fix it if we installed it? I am guessing the former. I am pretty sure that automatic updates is enabled.

No - I don’t say that. I just want to express, that there must be some change from evening to next morning causing a different behaviour and that this Windows update might be one of possible changes.

Please do not use the Answer field for comments that are not an answer to the original question / solution to the problem, use Comment instead, or edit your question to provide further details. Thanks.

Please don’t use answers, if you don’t provide a solution to the problem.

I didn’t understand what you meant by “don’t use answers…” at first. You meant to add a comment to the original post, rather than to respond by clicking the “Answer” button at the bottom, right?

After installing the optional update that Opaque referenced, the problem persists. Were there any other updates last night? Non-optional ones that might have been automatically installed?
