Libreoffice 6.3.3.2 keeps opening csv file as text instead of spreadsheet

I have a simple csv file with 50 columns and when I try to open the file in Libreoffice I keep getting a text file opened in writer instead of a spreadsheet in calc.

I also tried opening a new spreadsheet and then using Sheet/Insert sheet from file but that does not work either. I get a file selection window, I choose my csv file but the “Insert Sheet” dialog box does not show any selected file in it.

The file looks like this:

The data from “The file looks like this” works fine for me with Version: 7.3.3.2 (x64) / LibreOffice Community

But I must note that the data only has 14 columns, not 50.

Please try Sheet / Insert Sheet from File...

You can create a reduced .csv file that shows the issue, so we can test. Add an accepted extension to the file (i.e., filename.csv.ods); edit your question, and upload it there.

I saved your sample text as filename.csv.

In the file explorer, if I ask to open with LibreOffice, I get:

After OK, it is opened in Calc.

The same happen if I…

• drag and drop the file in the title bar of LibreOffice
• choose menu File - Open, and select the file

That also works for me, but opens a new dialog, and, after it, adds a new sheet to the document:

The Browse button allows you to select a different file.
