Libreoffice 6.3 or 7.0 will not open.

Tried both versions and it will only open in safe mode. When i try to launch either a new document or open an existing one, i just have the mouse icon changing to the “load” icon for a second and then nothing. I’m on windows 10.

I saw this question elsewhere with some anwsers, read the anwsers, and tried :

re-installing (several times) : while i have no problem during installation or de-installation, it has no effect
re booting : no effect
checking for windows updates : Windows 10 is up to date.
So far nothing worked.

BTW, Libre office works for others on this computer, just not me. I even tried disabling Bitdefender and Malwarebytes. I did the following and they didn’t work either.

Test whether user profle causes the issue

Right click → Run on Windows Start menu
Type “%ProgramFiles%\LibreOffice\program\soffice” --safe-mode into Open text field (including the double quotes)
Click OK
Archive your profile expanding Advanced (click on the word Advanced right above Help button) and click Archive User Profile button
Click button Continue in Safe Mode
Check LibreOffiice running.
If LibreOffice does start this way - your user profile most probably is corrupt and you need to reset.

And…

Reset your user profile - to reset the user profile perform:

Right click → Run on Windows Start menu
Type “%ProgramFiles%\LibreOffice\program\soffice” --safe-mode into Open text field (including the double quotes)
Archive your profile expanding Advanced (click on the word Advanced right above Help button) and click Archive User Profile button
Select option Reset to factory settiings
Activate [x] Reset entire user profile
Click button Apply Changes and Restart

And…

Had similar issue in 6.4.6.2. Couldn’t open the safe mode at all. Resolved by deleting the user profile. Here is the process: 1) Find the user profile folder in the file system following this webpage: https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/U… In my case, “%APPDATA%\libreoffice\4”.

  1. Make a copy of the folder “4”, just in case it has something important.

  2. Delete the folder “4”. If it can be deleted, try launching the LibreOffice normally. It should work. If it cannot be deleted, and system prompts some program is accessing this folder, go to step 4.

  3. Run Windows Task Manager, enable Detailed view, end all Apps and Background Processes starting with “LibreOffice”. Now try deleting the “4” folder again. If it can be deleted, then LibreOffice should work normally.

Note: Once the folder “4” is deleted, recent files are no longer listed. Other user info might be lost too. So please always make a copy before deleting, just in case.

Nothing has worked so far.

Windows 10 is up to date (18362.657)

That’s definitely incorrect even taking into account that you decided to stick with Windows 10 version 1903. According to Windows Update history for version 1903 the most recent build for version 1903 is 18362.1256. The overall current release is version 20H2 build 19042.804 (as of 2021-02-09)

Sorry, wrong number. It’s been deleted from the post. It is, however, up to date. Much of that is copy-n-paste as I’ve been trying to solve this problem all week and read many posts. It’s weird because it just stopped opening one morning, for no apparent reason, and it’s only on my computer profile. On my wife’s and daughter’s, both on this HP laptop, it works just fine. It’s driving me crazy.

Following is not clear to me (the question sounds to me like your “Does it work”-tests consist of clicking onto icons): Does LibreOffice start, if you use :

  • Right click -> Run on Windows Start menu (or Windows Key + R)
  • Type "%ProgramFiles%\LibreOffice\program\soffice" into Open text field (including quotes)
  • Click OK

?

(My gut feeling: your problem is within your Windows user account [keyword: ntuser.dat] and not within LibreOffice)

TRight click → Run on Windows Start menu (or Windows Key + R)
Type “%ProgramFiles%\LibreOffice\program\soffice” into Open text field (including quotes)
Click OK

Doing that opens Liberoffice.

“(My gut feeling: your problem is within your Windows user account [keyword: ntuser.dat] and not within LibreOffice)” OK, but what do I do about it? Am I supposed to type “ntuser.dat” somewhere?

Am I supposed to type “ntuser.dat” somewhere?

No, no - immediately forget the addition, if you are not familiar with the ntuser.dat file (esp. never, ever touch this file)

> Doing that opens Liberoffice.

As suspected, you got no problem with starting / runnnig LibreOffice, but a problem with what Windows does (or doesn’t) when you click onto an icon.

> OK, but what do I do about it?

I don’t know, because from my remote perspective it seems almost impossible to guide you through steps to fix a Windows account issue.

OK, well thanks anyway. I’ll figure something out.
