LibreOffice 7.3.3.2 (x64) "not responding" in Windows 10

Hello community,

I am trying to switch back to LibreOffice after several years of not using it. I downloaded the newest version, which I think is supposed to be stable, but it is, essentially, no operable due to the constant “freezing” aka “not responding.”

This happens is all sorts of situations from cutting and pasting to margin formatting, etc. (I’ve only tried Writer). There doesn’t seem to be rhyme or reason to this issue. I assume there is a conflict with Win 10 but although I can find my way around a computer I am in no way fluent. So, because of this, I would appreciate any answers that might address this problem to be simplified and not assume that I know anything.

BTW: I have tried to disable my firewall to no avail.

I am, of course, happy to answer any questions anyone might have that would clarify the problem and allow for a clear answer to resolving this issue.

You could try clicking Tools - Options - LibreOffice - View and unticking the box that says Use Skia for all rendering. This might fix the issue for you.
Alternatively, you could try ticking the box Force Skia rendering, depending on your graphics card this might solve the problem out might not maker any difference

Perhaps I spoke too soon. I just tried to adjust a character style and as soon as hit the button, boom…“not responding"

This will have no effect on your existing problem.
I consider it rather a dangerous interference with the operating system and should therefore be avoided at all costs.

It seems to have not, but the idea that it could not is wrong: we have some performance problems related to networking - like tdf#42673; so it indeed was worth trying (at least to nail down the problem).

@HerbWhisperer: I did not see in your description, if you worked with the same (or a few similar) documents, or does that happen with a new clean documents as well…

@mikekaganski Thanks for your comment and question. Actually, I didn’t try a new “clean” document but after doing what @EarnestAl suggested there was dramatic improvement.
That said, there seems to be an issue that is yet to be resolved, as I noted in my post regarding character style adjustment. However, I have been working with several different documents since the earlier adjustment and there haven’t been any other issue. Also note, I just left the program do “do its thing” for a while (sorry, not sure about the time) and did some other work. Came back, perhaps 1/2 an hour later, and it had opened the dialog box for character styles and it was functioning fine.
BTW: I also found some corrupt files on my machine, so that likely was also playing a part but the latter character style issue was after resolving those files.

OK, so I still seem to be having some sort of conflict…or something. I’m really hoping someone here has some advice/suggestion.

Since what I post initially above, things have improved dramatically. I can do most basic functions with no problem. However, when I try to, for example, edit a style or similar function the program gives me a “not responding” and “freezes” for some period of time. If I go do something else can wait for a period, the software seems to figure it out for itself and the window (i.e., edit styles window) is open and I can perform the task.

Based on this, does anyone have any idea what is going on? It seems to me that this should be pretty easy to solve since it seems to solve itself with 10-30 minutes. Obviously, this is not acceptable the way it is and I’ll never get anything done but I really hope tick a box or some other relatively simple solution will help me get on my way.

10-30 minutes is huge; still, I’d suggest to try disconnecting from Internet (and any other kind of network - probably just disabling all network connections) for a while.

OTOH, you could try to generate a minidump of the program during the freeze; wiki has details on how to do that. Then the generated minidump should be attached to a bug report.

So, I tried the debugging and it doesn’t get past the open executable, which is to say, it never gets to “not busy” and allows for an analysis.

I had the same issue and every thing came back to normal reinstalling the last STABLE release which is 7.2.6. Every version above is beta. I posted about this on the French forum.

Oh thanks ! In fact, 7.2.6 is the release that saved my mental health 2 weeks ago. Since then, I did not dare checking about an update.
