LibreOffice Base crash continuously

Base crashes very regularly and renders LibreOffice unavailable upon closing. This requires intervention from the Windows Task Manager.
.
This often occurs in edit mode and sometimes in user mode. In edit mode, I work on a copy. When this happens, LibreOffice allows recovery, but it’s inconvenient. However, in user mode, could these frequent crashes corrupt the file and render it unusable? I always have a copy, but still.
.
Are others experiencing this issue? Could this be related to corruption of my files?

Couldn’t say Base is crashing more than other components of LO here. ReportBuilder, integrated in Base, is instable when editing, but it has be more instable some years ago. When creating a report I would save the report and Base file very often.
.
If you are using internal HSQLDB reason for a crash could also be the Java-installation.
.
When using a database I would prefer external versions of database so Base itself will only contain forms, queries, reports and macros. Crash of Base won’t lead to dataloss of the external database.
.
Sometimes, when creating queries with many content I detect LibreOffice will save a lot of Base files in the LibreOffice backup folder. I see flickering on the statusbar and know: Save, close, delete content in backup, open LibreOffice again…
.
When getting regularly crashes I would do this: Rename the LibreOffice user folder (“4” to “4_old”). It will be created new. Try working with the new user folder.
.
Are there macros running while editing the database?
.
System here:
LibreOffice Version: 25.8.3.2 (X86_64)
Build ID: 8ca8d55c161d602844f5428fa4b58097424e324e
CPU threads: 6; OS: Linux 6.4; UI render: default; VCL: kf5 (cairo+xcb)
Locale: de-DE (de_DE.UTF-8); UI: de-DE
Calc: threaded

I’m currently editing forms, and this has happened several times while making changes in the properties window. Sometimes there was more than one form being edited. It’s hard to say if switching between them caused the instability of Base.
.
It also happened while editing custom dialog boxes in the macro editor and while editing macros themselves. But again, it’s difficult to say whether macro-related errors were responsible.
.
I’m using an HSQLDB file. My database uses many StarBasic macros, and I’m not sure which database management system would be most suitable for migrating my .odb file.
.
On Windows, the Java version is 1.8.0_431. I noticed there’s a newer version, 471. I’m going to install it and see if that helps stabilize LibreOffice.
.
I’ll follow your recommendations regarding renaming the folder. I’m going to do everything I can to succeed.
.
Thank you for the feedback.

When editing forms: I won’t edit 2 forms at the same times. If I need to copy elements from one form to another I would copy and insert the content, then save the form and save Base.

If it is unstable: Under Linux this depends on the window manger. You could use kde, gtk or the default x-desktop. Most stable version here could be started by SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gen ./soffice - but that is Linux.

I am using exactly the same versions of libreoffice and windows as yourself.
I use several different databases on a daily basis in tandem with PostgreSQL.
.
up until about a week ago I was using libreoffice 7.4.6.2, it’s not great but I am aware of the bugs and can handle them.
since the release of 7.4.6.2 I have installed many more recent versions of libreoffice but found that they usually contained all the bugs present in 7.4.6.2 and often introduced new ones.
.
on this site I read a post by Villeroy who was happily using Version: 25.8.3.2 (X86_64) on windows 10.
having previously tried 25.8.3.0 I was sceptical but decided to try it out.
I primarily use libreoffice for its Base forms and the issues found in 25.8.3.0 were also present in 25.8.3.2.

  1. on opening a form the window was blank, tried to close it but it just froze, used task manager to kill libreoffice.
  2. open form in edit mode, looks o.k.
hit design mode and form usually but not always displayed data.
click on form, form freezes, used task manager.
  3. tried safe mode, attempted all recommended fixes (hardware acceleration, user profile, extensions etc). but outcome was identical.

it’s now looking like windows is the problem.
right clicked on libreoffice selected run as administrator and all was o.k.
I set libreoffice properties to always run the program as administrator and have had no further issues.
.
there are definite issues with windows 11 and permissions.
why windows specifically requires me to open libreoffice with administrator permissions when I am the administrator is baffling although the same applies when I wish to read/write when using command prompt or power shell.

On Linux, I use KDE Plasma (X11) and I installed the latest version via Discover (Flathub). A recent update from Discover seems to have fixed this type of problem.

It’s really on Windows that things are more unpredictable. I’m going to try using administrator privileges as suggested by @cpb; if that helps reduce the number of crashes, I’ll be delighted.

Thanks @cpb for your feedback. I’ll test it with administrator privileges. I hope it goes smoothly. As you mentioned, Windows could be the source of the problem. Recently, I’ve noticed unusual behavior with Windows Explorer and some window management.
.
For example, when copying and pasting a file into a folder, the file doesn’t appear in the window unless I close the window and then return to confirm the copy.
.
Right-clicking a file to delete it doesn’t seem to do anything; it takes a very long time for the file to appear in the Recycle Bin.
.
I find Windows 11 rather mediocre in many respects. For me, the system boots up very slowly.
.
So you might be right that Windows could be responsible for some of the problems encountered with LO Base.

@Renel,
I am happy to use windows 11, it boots in 20 seconds and I have not encountered any of the problems that you highlighted.
.
our issues are not the same.
I have done some testing and below are my findings.
.
when using libreoffice 25.8.3.2 and connecting to either a PostgreSQL or MariaDB database:
double clicking on a form opens an empty window.
when I try to close that empty window I get the error message “LibreOffice is not responding” and therefore select “Close the program”.
.
if I open the same form in edit mode and then hit the Design Mode button then the form is populated with data and I am able to add/edit data, the form closes without issue.
.
Firebird embedded and external and HSQL embedded and split work as expected.
.
if I run libreoffice as an administrator then all databases work fine.
.
libreoffice versions prior to 25.8.3.0 did not generate this issue.
.
EDIT 2025-11-04:
yesterday using an existing Firebird embedded database I built a new form and found 2 issues:

  1. font size in label fields now has a default size of 8.
  2. contents of text box are malformed when alignment is set to centre or right.
text boxes created using versions prior to 25.8.3.0 do accurately display their contents.

I will be uninstalling this crap and reinstalling 7.4.6.2.
