This has been going on for a while now. I prefer LibreOffice Calc over Excel, but lately, it’s become very difficult to use. After being in a sheet for a while, making changes etc. it starts a strange behavior of taking extremely long times to let the change be made. Even moving to a different cell produces the dreaded color spinning disc. After about 10 seconds the disc goes away and the change is made. Once this behavior starts, every move made in the calc produces this delay. Shutting the application down, and restarting it clears up the problem. It is quite annoying. The same sheets do not have the problem in Excel.
It seems like a cache is filling up (on its own) and then shutting down the program clears it.
I hope someone out there has a solution, or recommendation to try to fix it.

This makes me assume you do store your files as .xls / .xlsx, which is not LibreOffice’s native format.
Yes, .xlsx is how I store them because it’s the most popular format. I don’t see why this would warrant a problem 20 minutes after using the product with no delays.
Using non-native format for LibreOffice is not recommended at all, regardless of its popularity. The recommended way is to work with native formats, having them to be the master document and to export to non-native formats only in case of exchanging the document with third parties not being able to read ODF format. This ask site is full of problem caused by working in alien (wit respect to LibreOffice) formats.
And I agree to I don’t see why…, but I’ve seen so many problems which I could not see in advance.
check two things,
do you use comments in your sheet? plenty? they cause slowdowns,
is autosave on? i observed slowdowns in sheets which are ‘responsive’ after a fresh load, but take seconds to react after the first autosave / ‘save as’, and or the first edit have taken place,
