Libreoffice calc spellcheck not working

I saw there is another post about this, from 2 years ago, but it has no solution. Right clicking on a word doesn’t show any spelling suggestions. Spelling errors are underlined in red, so they are recognized, but no correction alternatives are shown in the right-click menu.

Cell format doesn’t matter, double clicking or not double clicking the cell to edit doesn’t matter, language doesn’t matter (Tried several, all of which have the dictionary installed). Safe mode doesn’t do anything either.

It is also not intermittent. Been trying to get used to libreoffice in the last few months, but it seems I waste more time trying to fix things on it than actually using it.

Is there a fix for this bug? Or is it just easier to buy a license for another program?

libreoffice version 6.4.2, pc running ubuntu 20.04

Is there a fix for this bug?

If you are sure this is a bug then don’t ask users of LibreOffice, whether there is a bug fix, but find yourself at https://bugs.documentfoundation.org/. Anyway: I don’t assume a bug, since spellcheck works pretty fine on my 6.4.7.2 version using TDF (libreoffice.org) packages. Since you are on Ubuntu 20.04 my gut tells me, that the inital install was never corrected (full(!!!) uninstall of LibreOffice and reinstall) and you face another side of the general problem of initial installs of LibreOffice (using distro packages) on Ubuntu 20.04 based systems. Please see this question: cups Authentication not working correctly and the further references to other questions in my answer.

And why do you think it is a bug?

I also have a problem with spellcheck. It checks the spelling, but on any item where I click “ignore error” the error goes away. I save the sheet. Next time I open it the error is back. I don’t want to add every single one to dictionary, I just want it to stay ignored.

@smc12

I just want it to stay ignored.

Afaik you can’t do that without adding the results of your spell checkings to the rules of spell checking. And the rules are “delivered dictionaries” + “custom dictionaries”.
