Libreoffice hangs on Mac for 30 seconds (beachball) on Start

For the longest time, when starting LibreOffice on Mac (multiple versions but now the current libreoffice version), Writer (as one example) will beachball for about 30 seconds every time I start it. Then it’s OK and works fine.

To try to fix this annoying delay, I’ve tried

  • Total LibreOffice re-install. Did not work.
  • Turning off the auto-check for updates in LibreOffice. Did not work.

Just wondering what I need to try next so there isn’t this beachball, hang, every time I start Libreoffice.

Thanks very much in advance,

  • M

Is your default printer offline? On start up, when the document does not force a page format, LO queries the printer. If offline, it must wait for timeout.

The usual fix is to set a specific page format to avoid the query.

PS: when asking here always mention OS name (obviously MacOS but which version?), exact LO release and save format (when relevant).

EDIT:
My memory betrayed me. @Wanderer gave the right solution: in Preferences, LO Writer>Print untick Paper tray from printer settings to disable printer query. Load/Save>General Load printer settings with the document will “detach” your document from the printer by remembering print configuration.

I appreciate your kind reply. We will investigate further.

Thank you.

(P.S. Mac Version 15.6)

Hi,
I’m having the same issue. (MacOS 12.7.6 and LO 25.2.5.2) My printer is offline and disconnected. Where do I set the page format that you describe? And is this setting for the whole app or for each document I create?
Thanks!

The setting of page format is per file to allow working with different sizes at the same time, but there are default templates used when creating new documents. So set this default templates according to your needs.
.
See also the following thread, but note Tools-menu will be preferences, as Steve Jobs decided, there will Mac-Users expect it.

This is good info.

I wasn’t sure exactly how to do this either.

Thanks!
