Same problem. Updated to Sierra (from El Capitan) and… LibreOffice (last release) doesn’t work anymore.
I also have tried above tips but… with no success.
Dont know the reason but found a workaround:
In the Applications, right click on a LibreOffice icon and from the popup menu choose a Show Package Contents. Unfold the Contents folder then the MacOS folder and launch directly the soffice script. This worked for me.
Thanks. That doesn’t work for me. At least for 5.2.2002.
Tried this but it still hangs - icons corrupted. Sometimes text loads in Writer but then hangs immediately.
Okay, getting a little weirder. Also ran LO 5.1.5.2 on Late 2009 27" iMac under Sierra and it works fine. All icons are okay, Zotero Plugin is fine and all else seems to work. This same version did not work on a new 5K iMac. How curious. P.
Seems that today’s dev build works fine on Sierra, at least for me http://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/daily/master/MacOSX-x86_64@49-TDF/2016-10-07_04.14.12/master~2016-10-07_04.14.12_LibreOfficeDev_5.3.0.0.alpha0_MacOS_x86-64.dmg
Lumicz, tried your LibreOffice Dev suggestion. Still hangs in Writer and Calc. 27 5k iMac, late 2015, AMD Radeon R9 M390 2048 MB… oh well.
Found a potential work-around in another thread. On late 2015 27" iMac AMD Radeon R9 M390 changed the colour scheme in >Preferences>Display> Colour to “Generic RGB” and this allowed LO to run. No problems with icons and so far (2 documents) no crash or freeze.
Confirmed in another thread: When will Libreoffice be upgraded to work with Sierra OS - #2 by Blanksheet
As a test, I installed Sierra on a late 2012 Mac mini, LO 5.2.2.2 works fine (with JRE 1.8.0_102-b14) so there is something about the late 2015 27" iMac-5k platform that induces the error.
Thanks. This works for me.
Thanks, ist works for me with Version 5.2.1.2.
But after installing the Language Pack (de) ist also works now by just opening the File.
Tried all latest flavours including LibreOffice Vanilla from the app store - it was a bit more stable but eventually hung as well. I thought it might be Java so I reinstalled the 1.6 JRE for Mac - no difference. The soffice script launch did not work for me either.
Are you all seeing corrupted icons as well?
Please let me know if you need screenshots, stack dumps, etc.
Program unusable and corrupted icons for me too! LO 5.2.1 & macOS Sierra 10.12.
I too am having the same problems - for various startup scenarios LibreOffice just hangs on both fresh and still versions.

I’ve just posted a possible work around on another thread: LibreOffice 5.2.1 & 5.1.5 crashing after upgrading to macOS Sierra (10.12) - #16 by jpc101
It seems it has something common with the graphics card. I found another workaround that works fine for me independent on a LO version. If you have a system with a discrete graphics card, go to the System Preferences → Energy Saver and uncheck “Automatic Graphics Switching”. You will then use the high performance graphics and in that configuration - LO starts to work fine.
Try 5.2.3 RC1 fixes it. Works great and fixed it for me.
