LibreOffice Impress: Possible improvements of presentation mode (draw in presenter panel, switch presentation views)

Dear community,

I have recently started to use LibreOffice Impress for teaching purposes in academia and first of all, I want to say how grateful I am for such a professional and useful project.

I started to use LibreOffice as I try to make a switch to Linux (Fedora KDE) and previously, I used Microsoft PowerPoint. With my previous PowerPoint experience, there are two features concerning presentations which I am not able to figure out in LibreOffice Impress or which might not (yet) exist:

  1. Draw in presenter panel: I would like to be able to look at the presenter panel on the screen of my notebook (which includes all my notes on the presentation) and be able to draw on the slide embedded in the presenter panel. This would be quite useful, as the regular slide is shown on the projector and I cannot use my digital pen to draw.

  2. Switch to showing regular slides on two monitors in the presenter panel: If feature 1) is not (yet) available, it would be nice to have an easy way to show the regular slide show on the notebook screen as well as on the projector. I know that I can do so by changing the presentation options, but having this option within the presenter panel would be convenient, because then one could switch between showing the presentation notes and the presentation itself (with the ability to draw) on the notebook screen.

If anyone could tell me, if this is already possible, that would be great. If the two features are not yet available, it would be nice to hear if others would regard them as useful as well.

By the way: Sorry, if a similar post already exists (I looked but did not find any - but I am new to using forums).

Thank you all.

Click Slideshow > Slideshow settings and in the dialogue that appears, tick the box Mouse pointer as pen.
If you move the pointer to the display screen it is almost immediate in drawing; if you draw on the panel it can take a second or so for the lines to appear.

There are some shortcuts that might be helpful, such as P, to enable mouse as Pen; Ctrl+A to turn it off. Here are some more, see Presenter Console Keyboard Shortcuts

Thank you very much for your suggestion. I tried this a while and it works. The problem in practice in an academic or business setting is the time lag between drawing on the panel and the drawing appearing on the slide. This makes the feature not very helpful in practice as you cannot directly see the results of your own drawing which reduces its quality.

What would helpful would be: 1) Reducing the time lag, so that the drawing can be seen immediately or 2) having an easy way to switch between the panel view on one screen (with the presentation on the other) and showing the presentation on both screens.

But again, thank you very much. The feature is there but a refinement would be great. LibreOffice is an awesome projekt.

You can write a feature request.

I don’t know the situation but if you knew what you were going to draw in advance, you could have it prepared ready to appear when you click, or click on an object. Animation settings.

@EarnestAl Thank you very much for your suggestion. This might be a workaround until the drawing becomes faster.

@Hrbrgr Thank you very much for the tip. I thought that this was only for bugs, but I am going to check it out.
