I am running Libreoffice 5.1.4.2 - why are later versions 5.1.5 or 5.2 not offered as upgrades when I click on Check for Upgrades in the Help menu?
Thanks
You are most likely using a distro version - one provided through your OS (Ubuntu, Mint, etc). They may make changes to the release but more importantly they verify functionality within the OS. This means their releases are typically one or more versions behind the official releases.
Edit:
All my LO versions are “Fresh” and downloaded directly from LO. I reloaded v5.1.4.2 and the check for updates says ‘Version 5.1 is up to date’. I then reloaded v5.0.6.3 and again checked with a return ‘Version 5.1.4.2 is Available’ (although I see v5.1.5 posted). I believe the check is against the still version. Also it shows not having to wait for v5.1.6.x to be notified. I did not try the distro version.
It’s true that distro versions are quite behind but that does not explain why he is not been notified about new release. Distro version will still propose upgrade. You can always install new version manually.
Forgot to mention, under my current version v5.2.0.4 the check responds with “LibreOffice 5.2 is up to date.” so to be clear, I don’t know exactly where or what or how it is being checked.
If you have LO 5.1.4 installed, that upgrade option will do it’s thing when LO 5.2.4 become available (or any other version above that). It will notify you about next release relative to that third digit of whatever release you currently have installed.

What you say may be true to a point but as of right now Ubuntu software latest release is v5.1.4
If we are talking about software from Ubuntu Software Center (distro version), then Ubuntu will propose upgrade when new release of LibreOffice become available in Ubuntu Software Center. You check for those kind of upgrades trough Synaptic package manager or Ubuntu Software Center. But if you open LibreOffice and go Help → Check for update then whole Ubuntu thing is bypassed and process go like I explained.
@Ratslinger: if you’re on Ubuntu[-based] and don’t mind using the Fresh branch, use https://launchpad.net/~libreoffice/+archive/ubuntu/ppa
