SOLVED
The solution is to Navigate to:
Format, Paragraph , Indents and Spacing,
then down in that dialog box set the values for Spacing above and below paragraph to 0.00" in both boxes or that horrid metric “cm” if you use that.

The original question was:
I have two computers running the same OS ubuntu 20.04 and the same libre office the workstation does not do this the laptop does
The workstation responds to a carriage return as if I used Shift+Carriage Return
The laptop adds a double space when I hit carriage return.
Often when I am taking text from a web page, (this time it is the street address for a residential hall at Purdue) I have a problem that I (thus far) have failed at solving.
The text will come over with some formatting. This formatting includes double line spacing.
I want single line spacing.
So I highlight the text or do CTL A to select all and then go to FORMAT, SPACING, and LINE SPACING
In Line spacing I select “Line Spacing 1”
And nothing happens. The lines of text do not come closer together.
Sometimes on my laptop, my clumsy fingers inadvertently hit a key stroke sequence and I get double line spacing in the middle of a document and again I am helpless to fix it.
Now if I select “line spacing 2” the lines of text get further apart. So I know that something is working, but it’s not working the way I expect or need.
An observation is that this occurs after a carriage return
What am I doing wrong?
