LO font selection shows foreign language as sample

VER: LibreOffice Community version 7.3.7.2
OS: Linux MInt 21.2 Victoria

When selecting/changing a font, the drop down shows the font names but the sample on the right is in s foreign language.

I have checked Tools->Options->Language Settings and removed anything that’s not English.
I have removed/purged anything that wasn’t English from the install packages:

sudo nala purge libreoffice-l10n-zh-cn libreoffice-l10n-zh-tw libreoffice-l10n-ru libreoffice-l10n-pt libreoffice-l10n-pt-br libreoffice-l10n-it libreoffice-l10n-es libreoffice-l10n-fr

I have restarted LO and the machine itself after each attempt. No change. The sample is still not displayed in English.

Any help would be appreciated.

I think it is the name of the font in the language for which it is intended to render characters, not a sample. The name would be contained within the font. Not every font shows anything at the right, but most show the name of the font in the style of the font at the left. Noto font family contains characters for many different languages which makes it useful to select the suitable font.

If you want to select a font by looking at words in various fonts then a font manager would be the tool, there should be at least one available in the repository for your OS. It uses a standard phrase or one you typed in, and will show many different fonts on your system all using the same phrase.

At a stretch, you could select a few words and use Format > Character to display the phrase in different fonts without the dialogue disappearing.
