Hi, download the first file from Sample WMV files download | File Examples Download, embed it into an empty impress document, and check if it is playing in slide show mode. This is the most native windows format

Thank you for your input. However, although I was not able to download the *.wmv sample files using the link given by you, I did try to insert other *.wmv files into the LOImpress slide - BUT alas nothing works, and I am still back to square 1 experiencing the same problem in playing the embedded/inserted Videos directly from the slide.
Lately, I did install the “K-Lite_Codec_Pack_1875_Mega” program - and rebooted my laptop, but LOImpress did not show any signs of improvement to alleviate the problem
As a control measure I, thereafter, accessed Microsoft 365 online and embedded *.wmv, *.mp4 and *.mpg files into the Powerpoint online software - and the video played immediately from within the presentation slide giving smooth sound and video quality on my laptop.
I feel confident that the LibreOffice developers will look into this anamoly at the earliest and bring about a solution in the upcoming versions of LOImpress.

… if you are not able to download video files from the internet I believe you have severe limitiations in access and execution rights on your computer. You are probably better served with online services like Microsoft 365.

Check in your anti virus and anti ransomware settings that nothing is blocked.
Click Tools > Media player and open the intended video file (try first with the wmv file used in your PowerPoint file). Does it play? If not then the issue lies with the codecs. Try downloading and installing K-Lite again. Check the codecs are installed and not blocked by Windows or by anti virus.

I would not use an experimental version of LibreOffice (25.2.0.1 ) to test something that isn’t working for you. You won’t know if it is a bug in a new version or the problem that you are trying to solve.

Thank you for your advice. It seems to be very sound and yes, i do agree that there could be issues as regards my antivirus settings which I will definately check, as well the fact that my present use of a BETA version of LO (25.2.0.1) may not be the right thing to use - so maybe I will downgrade to the stable LO version 24.8.3.2 and recheck if it works - starting with the *.wmv VDO file format first.
After all, if it works for you - it sure should work for me as well, God willing.

Start a new Impress-presentation. Insert video. Start from first slide. You get a dark screen and you hear the sound of the video. I installed gstreamer1.0-libav, gstreamer1.0-plugins-ugly. Tried all kind of themes, but nothing helped. Some video’s give a dark screen and some noise. I use a work-around now: I insert the first frame into the slide and assign an action on mouse-click, namely to play the video. That works well, but it’s a work-around.
Starting LO as follows libreoffice --impress --backtrace gives

I have exactly this problem. I can insert MP4s and WMVs into Impress and they play perfectly OK. However MPGs display the first frame but when played turn white and I get just the sound. All three formats work with PowerPoint and with Impress on Linox(Zorin) after downloading the requested CODICs. I have a lot of MPGs, too many to convert and I need to tell my customers how they can use them with Impress. I am also using Windows 11.

As mentioned I am running the latest updated version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.6093) of Windows 10 Pro and currently using the LibreOffice 25.2.4.3 version - but I am still facing this issue of not being able to insert VDOs in the wma, mpeg, mpg and wmv file formats into a slide in an active LO Impress file.
I have installed the latest “K-Lite_Codec_Pack_1905_Mega” pack on my laptop.
This is so unfortunate. But I am sure that the matter will be resolved in due course either by method resolution on this forum or in the future updates of LO.

The problem I have with MPEG2 is that Impress shows the first frame of the video, but then I only get the sound!.
I have tried downloading the Klite pack of Codecs (and others) and they do improve the situation and they do work - for a short time! By next morning it has reverted to the original problem. This is very frustrating and may mean that I have to go back to PowerPoint - which I don’t really want to do.
Sorry, but he has a completly different problem, but seems to hijack “your” thread. Maybe we should put all video related stuff here (instead of opening one thread per topic)…
Check, if the default handler for your video is still something from klite then. Windows (or your security system) may not allow to make this permanent. For Windows: try to assign this manually, this should survive a reboot. Test this instead of waiting for the next day…
Using only software from the manufacturer of your OS is what they (MS/Apple) like best.

While we appreciate your comments to the basic problem that @MikeBossingham and I are both facing regarding LO Impress not being able to playback vidoes embedded in the slides with both the video stream and sound, you have not offered us any solution to this VERY REAL and utterly vexing problem being faced by us with Impress presently.
Please suggest, if you can, ways that we can overcome this problem - for which I would be very grateful to you.

I have found a work around but it is less than satisfactory. I have to convert all videos to MP4 and then they can added to the presentation. The animations do not work in Impress, but I can get effect by using a extra slide.
However the connection to the videos is lost if the presentation is saved as a PPT, but are OK is saved as an ODT.
It’s now workable, but feels clumsy and requires more work.

Similar issues here. I’ve successfully installed all necessary codecs and have made the same movie into avi, mp4, ogv, wmv, and mpg versions which play in media players and appear to load properly into Impress. They all play using the media playback pane or media bar in Impress but refuse to start in slideshow mode on either of two PCs. what have I missed here? Windows 10 and Windows 11; LibreOffice 25.8.1.1.

Generation was with

I downloaded the test video and it played perfectly, although my own presentation was still refusing to play my video (also a wmv) on the same computer. I added my video to testvideo.odp and it played in that, so added my other material and got the slideshow that I had been struggling with for a fortnight to work in testvideo.odp. It is a little bit flaky and doesn’t like me meddling with the transitions, but it goes. I’ve no idea why, but thank you.
