All the internet sites describe Memory as being under Tools/Options/General, but now [since v.6] as “deprecated”. I am using v.7.4.7.2 [64=bit] and Memory is nowhere to be found. I have 7.4 Quickstarter loaded but it still seems very slow to load. Does anyone know a quick way to load Calc files?
The obsolete parameter only referred to the graphic memory.
Thanks for your input BUT you did not answer the question!
Is your printer normally turned off? Is it just the first file that you open is slow?
Maybe set a local pdf printer as default so LibreOffice doesn’t have to wait for a response.
If on Windows then installing manufacturer’s open printer driver might fix problem.
To help everyone, could you please click Help - About LibreOffice and click the icon just after Version information to copy details to clipboard and paste into your question (click the pencil icon to edit question).
Many thanks for your reply.
In answer to your points
1- Printer [HP2290] is always on with the PC
2 - We have no other printer, so local pdf printer not an option
3 - Yes, it is the first file to open that is slow - as it nears the year end, I will consider culling the data in it.
4 - Am on Windows 10, but no idea how to find nor install printer manufacturer’s own driver - at present, only allowing Windows to download driver

Indirectly he did. The memory option was about how much memory graphic objects could use before they were swapped out. It was not related at all to general memory handling nor loading speed (au contraire, documents with lots of graphic objects in a view area could continuously swap out and swap in their memory if not sufficiently set, significantly slowing down things). The option was removed because modern operating systems do a much better job in determining what parts of used memory can be swapped out than an application can.
Your assumption that the missing option would be responsible for some now slow loading files of your’s is unfounded.
Hi. Re your answers:
- Sometimes printer goes to sleep and has to wake up to let LibreOffice know its settings so LO can apply those settings to the spreadsheet.
- A PDF printer is a virtual printer. There is a Microsoft PDF printer included with Windows 11 and I thought with Windows 10. You might be able to add using Control Panel > Programs and Features
- If the data is held on a spinning hard disc, as opposed to Solid State Drive, then a larger file is likely to be slower to load. With a spinning disc then defragmentation and other optimisations can help; don’t defragment SSD.
- I could not find HP2290 but HP lists a driver for HP F2290 at HP Deskjet F2290 All-in-One Printer Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Customer Support . Download driver and double click file to install. The manufacturer’s drivers tend to have more functionality too.
Cheers, Al
Hi
Thanks for all your help BUT, it seems that culling the data was the answer. I removed loads of “extra” tabs, and pre-2023 data, saving the file under a new name, and it now opens much quicker.
Please feel free to close the topic.

Subject [Ask LibreOffice] [English] Load speed/Memory where?
Check, if you have set the rows to optimal row height. This seems to be re-calculated on every load. If you set a fixed row-height for “archived” sheets, it may load quicker… (in your 7.4).
Hi Wanderer
Many thanks for the tip - now set row height not optimal - will check opening speed when PC next on later today
