Loosing files without any hope of recovery

On several occasions, without actually being present in the Text Window involved, the window inexplicably closed after having been saved multiple times. No trace of the file was found, and, further, the Recuvia Deep Scan could not find any trace of the file. Is this a known bug? New computer. It never happened on the old computer.

Please help.
Thank you.

Best,
Dick

I forgot to mention, there were no traces in the C;\Windows\users\present user\LibreOffice recovery area.

Dick

You need to add soffice.bin to the allowed list of your anti virus or anti ransomware programme, it probably prevents LibreOffice from writing to disk. See this for Windows Defender/Windows Security Defender Controlled folder access exception for LibreOffice - The Document Foundation Wiki

Dear Sir,

Thank you for your help. I will make the change.

Best,
Dick

It might just have been Windows restarting after Update Tuesday (second Tuesday of the month, or Wednesday for some of us). You could look in C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\Temp or other Temporary Files path defined in Tools > Options > LibreOffice > Paths.

What you are looking for is a folder with a name starting lu and ending .tmp, e.g. lu12345mufka.tmp , with a date of the crash (restart).

  • Open the folder, find the largest file inside and copy it to another folder, e.g. Documents.
  • Open LibreOffice, click Open file and navigate to the newly pasted file. If it opens OK then Save As another name and carry on.

Dear Sir,

You are a fountain of Wisdom! Thank you, as I had thought that my valuable files were gone forever.

Best,
Dick
