Mac OS X 10.7: LibreOffice requires a Java runtime environment (JRE) to perform this task

I’ve searched the other answers but haven’t found this exact issue. I must have done something silly or unusual, but in searching the web I can’t figure out what.

If I open LibreOffice, occasionally the following message will pop up:

LibreOffice requires a Java runtime environment (JRE) to perform this task. Please install a JRE and restart LibreOffice.

Apple bundles Java with the OS, so I should already have a JRE. I have tried selecting numerous paths manually in Preferences → General → Java, but to no avail. Not sure what to try next.

The application works well enough, but I’d like to resolve this message and make sure it fully works.

@ProLogic I can’t download a JRE because Apple supplies one.

It’s 2016 now. I have 64bit JRE and LO 5.1. Can advice please be provided on which paths to enter?

You need a 32bit JVM. Most likely you only have a 64 bit VM installed. Beginning with Libreoffice 4.2 we will provide also 64 bit MacOSX builds which work with a 64 bit JVM.

Thanks for this update. Good to get some clarity on this issue.

May be just try to install the last Java runtime environment JRE
because Apple supplies their own version of Java. Use the Software Update feature (available on the Apple menu / Software Update…) to check that you have the most up-to-date version of Java for your Mac.
For mac it’s actually the version 6 (if i remember)

Hi @wizonesolutions,

Still looking for an Answer here? Could you please try to install the latest release of LibreOffice and Java (see @ProLogic’s answer above) and see if that fixes the issue?

Hi,
I’m using LO 4.0.2.2 on OS X 10.8.3 and I’m having the same issue. Only, the message (“LibreOffice requires a Java runtime…”) pops up so frequently that it’s really disturbing my work. Things get even worse when I type in Japanese (I can’t type more than 2 characters without having the message poping up).
I didn’t find a solution to this problem on forums: would anyone have an idea?

(Sorry, this is meant to be a comment, but I don’t find the commmenting tool…)

@_Josephine – you needed more karma to be able to comment (I just up-voted your Answer for that purpose)

@_Josephine, Do you have a JRE installed on your system? I thought that Apple was shipping their own Java lately, but I can’t remember the exact situation…

@qubit1 : thanks for your answer (and thanks for the karma thing, didn’t know about that)! I haven’t installed a JRE myself so if I have anything, it should be Apple’s Java… But it looks to me like I don’t have a JRE at all.

@_Josephine either open a terminal and type: java -version and see what it reports, or go here. I have v1.6.0_45 working fine under MacOS 10.6.8 (with LO).

@Josephine - JRE problem and Japanese seems to be a Mac+JRE problem on my windows machine I have no problems to write Japanese.
XP english Prof / SP3 / Asian language support package.
I hope this information supports identification of the route cause.

Hi there,
i have same issue…

Mac OS X 10.9 + LibreOffice 4.1.2.3

Since nothing was working i installed JDK & JRE 7… while JRE 6 should be provided from OS X already…

Anyway LibO couldn’t detect any JRE…

Any hint??

Thanks in advance,
best regard!
