Master Pages in Libre Office Writer

I’m trying to set up a master document into which I can import multiple chapters. I have created the first two individual chapters exactly as required such that the First Page of each has no header, the Left Pages all have one header and the subsequent Right Pages have a different header for each chapter.

The master document is derived from the same template as the individual chapters except that in each chapter I have created a Custom Page Style of “Right Page Chapter 1” (In chapter 1) and “Right Page Chapter 2” (In chapter 2).

The chapter on Master Documents says, among other things “Custom styles used in sub-documents, such as paragraph styles, are automatically imported into the master document.” and I take this to mean that, even though my Custom Page Styles don’t exist in the master document, they will be imported.

The result I am getting is that when I insert the individual chapter sub-documents only the Right Page Chapter 1 and its header is imported and applied to the whole of the master document.

I’ve been reading the documentation and experimenting with different options all day but there must be some vital point I am missing to enable me to have different right-hand page headers for each chapter imported into the master document.

Any advice or suggestions greatly appreciated.

What is unique in your headers? You should be using fields in your header, generally you only need chapter title or Book title.

Thanks for your help. Problem solved and project now proceeding.

You can’t have different sub-documents use different definitions of same-name styles. If the styles are defined in the master, its definition will be used in all. If they are not defined in master, then the first document’s definition will be used in the rest. The idea of master documents is exactly to enforce uniformity in styling.
